The pier gives decent codling and whiting through the winter on the usual baits, and the big thornback rays that turn up here every year are the draw for many regulars. Watch the tide: the biggest tides (over 11.5 to 12 metres on the local scale) can come right over the top of the pier. In summer, mullet show in Portishead Marina and need stealth, small baits and bread or earthworm. Battery Point is the famous mark nearby: fishable at most stages of the tide, though a spring tide runs so hard that holding the bottom becomes impossible. Water is deep close in, so short casts still catch, but long casts find the best fish. Step up to 4/0 to 6/0 hooks for a proper winter cod, and expect silver eels, conger, flounder, dogfish, bull huss and rockling too.

Fishing UK freshwater in England or Wales requires a valid Environment Agency rod licence for anyone aged 13+. Check if you need one and buy online.
