🌊 Dogfish
A small, hardy shark species and one of the most common UK shore-fishing catches, often regarded as a nuisance bait-stealer by anglers targeting other species but a genuinely interesting catch in its own right.
Identification
Slender, elongated body covered in rough, sandpaper-textured skin (true shark denticles rather than scales), with a mottled brown-grey back covered in small dark spots. Two dorsal fins set well back on the body.
UK habitat
Extremely common around the entire UK coastline, over most types of ground, and active both day and night, making it one of the most reliably caught sea species around Britain.
