π Whiting
A reliable, prolific winter shore and boat target around the UK, often the fallback species when bigger fish like cod aren't showing, and a genuinely good eating fish in its own right.
Identification
Slender, silvery body similar in shape to a small cod but without a chin barbel (or with only a very small one), and a distinctive black spot at the base of the pectoral fin.
UK habitat
Widespread around the UK coast, particularly reliable from autumn into winter on shore marks and inshore boat trips. Tends to shoal in large numbers over sand and mixed ground, making it a dependable catch when other species are quiet.
