π Flounder
The most widespread UK flatfish and often the first flatfish species new sea anglers catch, tolerant of a very wide range of salinity, right up into brackish estuary and even freshwater-influenced stretches.
Identification
A right-eyed flatfish (both eyes on the right side when viewed with the mouth pointing left) with a roughly diamond-shaped body, generally sandy-brown with occasional faint orange spots, and small bony tubercles along the lateral line and near the fin bases.
UK habitat
Found all around the UK coast, especially in estuaries, harbours and even well up tidal rivers where salinity is low, more tolerant of brackish and low-salinity water than most other flatfish.
