🌊 Mullet

A wary, notoriously difficult-to-catch shoaling species (most commonly thick-lipped grey mullet in the UK) that frequents harbours and estuaries and rewards genuinely careful, light-tackle approaches.

Silvery-grey, torpedo-shaped body with dark horizontal stripes running along the flanks, a small mouth, and thick, fleshy lips (in the thick-lipped species). Often seen cruising in visible shoals near the surface in calm harbour water.

Common in harbours, marinas and estuaries around the UK coast, particularly in summer, feeding on algae and small organic matter. Regarded by many specialist sea anglers as one of the most challenging UK species to actually catch despite how visible the fish often are.
