🌊 Conger eel
The UK's largest eel species and a serious specimen target for boat and pier anglers, known for its raw power and for hiding in wrecks, reefs and rocky ground.
Identification
Long, thick, scaleless, eel-like body, grey-brown to almost black on the back with a pale belly, and a large mouth full of sharp teeth. The dorsal fin runs continuously along most of the back and connects to the tail and anal fin.
UK habitat
Found around rocky coastlines and especially wrecks right around the UK, particularly in the South West, Wales and Ireland-facing waters, sheltering in holes and wreckage during the day and feeding more actively after dark.
