St Catherine's Breakwater

Jersey · Coastal

Free

A long Victorian breakwater on Jersey's east coast, built to shelter a naval harbour that was never finished but left behind one of the island's best all-round marks. Mackerel, garfish and wrasse fish well off the wall through summer, bass, black bream and dogfish add to the mixed bag, and the deeper water off the end holds thornback rays and, for anglers fishing bigger baits, bull huss and conger.

Access: Free shore access along the breakwater and slipway, no rod licence needed for sea fishing

Parking: Car park at the base of the breakwater, tarmac walkway the full length of the wall

Spinners and feathers or daylights fished along the wall take mackerel, with float-fished baits picking off garfish. Ragworm, lugworm, fish strip, squid or peeler crab baits fished on the bottom cover wrasse, bass, bream and dogfish, while sandeel or large fish strip baits on size 4/0 hooks are the standard rig for thornback rays off the deeper end. Step up to larger baits and hooks for bull huss and conger.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
