🌊 Bass

Sea fish · recorded at 60 spots on the map · best season: Summer to autumn

One of the most prized UK sea fish for both eating and sport, a hard-fighting species that's subject to specific recreational bag limits and a seasonal catch-and-release window.

Identification

Streamlined, silvery body with a spiny first dorsal fin held separately from the softer second dorsal fin. Superficially similar to grey mullet at a glance but with a much larger mouth and genuinely predatory behaviour.

UK habitat

Found right around the English, Welsh and southern coastlines, particularly over sandy and rocky marks, estuaries and around structure. Recreational anglers currently face a daily bag limit and a February-to-March catch-and-release-only window, so check current rules before keeping any fish.
