🌊 Garfish

Sea fish · recorded at 19 spots on the map · best season: Summer

An unmistakable, needle-shaped surface-feeding sea fish that arrives inshore in summer, popular as a light-tackle target and notable for its striking green-tinted bones.

Identification

Long, slender, silver body with an elongated beak-like jaw lined with fine teeth, unmistakable among UK sea species. The bones and backbone have a distinctive pale green colouring, which is harmless and doesn't affect the fish's edibility.

UK habitat

Arrives inshore around the UK coast in summer, often feeding just under the surface in open water near piers, harbour walls and over open ground, frequently caught on light float tackle or small lures fished shallow.
