Ramsgate Royal Harbour

Kent · Coastal

Free

England's only Royal Harbour, its curving stone walls sheltering a marina full of fishing boats and yachts below the chalk cliffs of West Cliff. Fish the pier and harbour walls for a proper mixed bag: whiting, codling and flatfish through the colder months, Dover sole and pouting worked close in on worm baits, school bass and dogfish year-round, and summer bringing mackerel, garfish and pollock to lures and float-fished baits. Rays and smooth-hounds turn up too for anyone fishing bigger baits further out. The nearby beaches add another dimension for anyone who wants to spread out from the harbour proper.

Access: Free shore access from the harbour walls, pier and nearby beaches, no rod licence needed for sea fishing. Go early morning or late at night in summer, the beaches either side get properly busy through the day.

Parking: Harbour car parks and seafront pay-and-display around the Royal Harbour and Marina

Worm baits fished close in account for most of the flatfish and pouting off the harbour walls; lures and float-fished baits work better for the summer species. Beaches either side of the harbour get very busy in summer, so early or late sessions are the move.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
