Cat and Dog Steps, Seaburn

Tyne and Wear · Coastal

Free

One of the North East's more memorably named marks, a set of steps down from Seaburn promenade to a concrete platform with railings, right on the coast path near Roker. Cod is the headline species, with flounder and whiting also showing, and the mark fishes best at high tide when the platform puts you right over the water.

Access: Free shore access, no rod licence needed for sea fishing

Parking: Roadside parking along the Seaburn seafront, short walk to the steps

Species you can expect

SpeciesBest season
Cod / codling Autumn, Winter
Flounder Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter
Whiting Winter

Size 2/0 hooks with peeler crab, worm, mackerel or shellfish cover most of what swims past here. The platform and railings make this an easier mark to fish than most of the rock marks nearby, but waves still splash over it in bad weather, so keep an eye on the sea state and don't fish it when conditions turn rough.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
