St John's Point

County Down · Coastal

Free

A rocky headland south of Killough marked by its black-and-yellow banded lighthouse, with rough ground running out from the shore that produces a genuinely wide species mix. It's a mark that rewards spinning and float fishing as much as bottom fishing, and one where lost tackle comes with the territory.

Access: Free shore access around the lighthouse and rock marks, no rod licence needed for sea fishing

Parking: Point Road runs out to the lighthouse with parking nearby

Species you can expect

SpeciesBest season
Pollock All
Coalfish All
Bass Summer
Wrasse Summer
Mackerel Summer
Cod Winter
Bull huss All
Conger eel All
Ling All

Spinners and plugs take pollock and coalfish, float fishing adds bass, wrasse and mackerel, and daylights and feathers work well for a mackerel run. Bottom fishing on rotten-bottom rigs brings cod, bull huss, conger and ling, but the ground here is very rough and tackle losses are the norm rather than the exception.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
