🌊 Ling

Sea fish · recorded at 13 spots on the map · best season: Summer to autumn

A large, powerful member of the cod family found over deep, rough ground and wrecks, a genuine specimen target for UK boat anglers rather than a typical shore catch.

Identification

Long, eel-like body with a large head, a single barbel under the chin, and a mottled brown-olive back fading to a paler belly. The first dorsal fin is short, followed by a much longer second dorsal fin running most of the length of the back.

UK habitat

Found over deep, rough ground, reefs and wrecks around the UK, particularly off the South West, Wales and Scotland, almost exclusively a boat-fishing target given the depths and ground it favours.
