Kessingland Beach

Suffolk ·

Free

A vast, snag-free stretch of open sand just south of Lowestoft, easy to fish and easy to spread out on even on a busy weekend. Winter rods here are after cod on pennell rigs, with whiting, flounder and dab filling the bag alongside them. Come summer the beach switches to sole country - small size 4-6 hooks score best - plus bass and smooth-hound patrolling the surf, with rays worth a longer cast out past the bar.

Access: Free shore access, no permit needed

Parking: Beach car park and holiday park access nearby, level walk onto open sand

Use pennell rigs for winter cod; small 4-6 hooks are the trick for sole through the summer months, and rays are on the cards at distance. The open, snag-free ground makes this a forgiving beach to learn distance casting on without losing rigs.

Fishing UK freshwater in England or Wales requires a valid Environment Agency rod licence for anyone aged 13+. Check if you need one and buy online.
