Hendon Promenade

Tyne and Wear · Coastal

Free

One of the easiest sea marks in Sunderland to actually get to, a sea-defended promenade where you can park right next to where you're fishing. Cod is the main winter target, especially after rough weather has stirred the ground up, with whiting, flounder, dab and a summer bass also on the cards.

Access: Free shore access, no rod licence needed for sea fishing

Parking: Parking directly alongside the promenade, no walk-in required

Bass Summer

Ragworm, lugworm, squid and peeler crab all work here, fished on a pulley rig with strong pattern size 2/0 hooks to cope with the snaggy ground close in. Fishing is best straight after a spell of rough weather, when a stirred-up sea pulls cod and whiting in close. Take care retrieving fish over the rocks and boulders near the shore, and in heavy seas waves can crash straight over the blue sea-defence fences, so keep an eye on conditions rather than just the rod tip.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
