Crimdon Beach

County Durham · Coastal

Free

An open, shallow sandy beach about a mile north of Hartlepool that rewards a long cast, and one with genuine pedigree, the UK record Ray's bream (7lb 15oz) came off this beach back in 1967. Winter cod and whiting fish best straight after a blow, while flounder, dab and summer flatfish and bass are around for most of the rest of the year.

Access: Free shore access, no rod licence needed for sea fishing

Parking: Car park at Crimdon Park, flat walk onto the beach

Fish low water, ideally a spring tide, and be ready to cast well out, the shelving here is shallow and gentle. Single-hook clipped-down pennell rigs with squid, peeler crab or black lugworm are the standard approach, and a blow in the days before you fish is the best possible sign.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
