π Sole
A prized eating flatfish (Dover sole) that feeds mainly by scent and touch rather than sight, making it a species particularly suited to after-dark bottom fishing.
Identification
A right-eyed flatfish with an elongated, oval body, small eyes set close together, and a distinctly curved, hook-like snout overhanging the small mouth. Brownish, mottled colouring that provides strong camouflage against sand.
UK habitat
Found over sandy and muddy ground around the UK coast, particularly the South and South East, most reliably caught fishing after dark, when sole become significantly more active and willing to feed.
