Holliwell Point
FreeOne of the best thornback ray marks on the whole East Anglian coast, sat right where the River Crouch meets the open sea near Burnham-on-Crouch. Cast out into the deeper water with mackerel, herring, bluey or sandeel and you're in classic ray territory - this stretch of the Dengue peninsula has a proper reputation among ray anglers willing to walk out for it. Cod and whiting take over through winter, while summer brings bass and sole into casting range too.
Access: Free shore access, no permit needed
Parking: Remote spot on the Dengie peninsula; nearest parking is some distance away with a walk across the flats, so check tide times before heading out

Distance casting is the key here - the ray fishing really opens up once you can reach the deeper channel water. Bait up big for rays: mackerel, herring, bluey or sandeel all work. This exposed, low-lying stretch of coast floods and empties fast, so treat tide timing with real respect. The River Crouch itself, just around the point, also fishes well for flounder, silver eels and bass on ragworm or crab baits.
