Walcott

Norfolk · Coastal

Free

A steep, no-nonsense shingle beach between Mundesley and Happisburgh on the north Norfolk coast, the kind of straightforward venue that rewards a standard two-hook flapper rather than anything fancy. Dab and flounder are the year-round bread and butter here, close in and easy for a beginner to get among, while a longer cast out past the bar has a real chance of turning up a ray or a smooth-hound for anyone prepared to work for it.

Access: Free shore access, no rod licence needed for sea fishing

Parking: Roadside and beach-access parking in the village

Species you can expect

SpeciesBest season
Dab Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter
Flounder Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter
Thornback ray Summer, Autumn
Smooth-hound Summer

Keep it simple close in for dab and flounder on lugworm or a small crab bait, then swap to a bigger bait on a longer cast if you're chasing the ray or smooth-hound run. The beach shelves steeply, so tackle losses on the shingle are part of the deal here.

Sea fishing needs no rod licence anywhere in the UK - shore, boat or wreck marks are all licence-free.
