🐟 Chub

A wary, opportunistic river fish known for taking a genuinely wide range of baits, from bread to lures to natural food items, and for spooking easily in clear water.

Thick-set, almost cylindrical body with a broad head and a large mouth with a slightly pouting lower lip. Silvery flanks, dark olive back, and orange-tinged lower fins, superficially similar to a large dace but noticeably more heavily built.

Common in rivers across England and Wales, from small streams to major systems, typically holding near overhanging cover, undercut banks and structure. Also present in some canals and stillwaters. Known for feeding confidently even in bright daylight if undisturbed.
