🐟 Barbel
A powerful, fast-water specialist and one of the hardest-fighting UK coarse species pound for pound, prized by river anglers specifically for the fight rather than just the size.
Identification
Torpedo-shaped and muscular, with a distinctly undershot mouth carrying four long barbels, the feature that gives the species its name. Bronze-brown back fading to a pale, almost white belly.
UK habitat
A true river specialist, found in faster, well-oxygenated stretches with gravel or rubble bottoms, classic barbel rivers include the Trent, Severn, Wye and various Hampshire and Berkshire chalk streams. Rarely found in stillwaters, its whole body shape is built for holding position in current.
