π Pollack
A hard-fighting member of the cod family associated with rough ground, wrecks and reef marks, popular with both lure and bait anglers for the fight it puts up on light tackle.
Identification
Streamlined and greenish-bronze to brown, with a noticeably protruding lower jaw and a lateral line that curves distinctly over the pectoral fin, a useful way to distinguish it from the similar coalfish, whose lateral line runs straighter.
UK habitat
Found around rocky coastlines, reefs, wrecks and kelp beds right around the UK, from small shore-caught fish to specimen sizes over wrecks fished by boat. A key target species for wreck and reef lure fishing.
