🐟 Crucian carp

A genuinely wild native UK species, distinct from the common carp, valued by specialist anglers precisely because true, unhybridised crucians are increasingly scarce.

Deep-bodied like a small carp but without any barbels at all, a key identifying feature since hybrids with common carp often show a single small barbel. Golden-bronze colouring and a convex-edged dorsal fin.

Found in still ponds and small lakes, tolerant of low-oxygen, weedy conditions that few other coarse species can handle. Genuine, unhybridised crucian populations are now relatively rare in the UK, which is a large part of their appeal to specialist anglers.
